Kiski – Wastewater Treatment Plant Upgrade

Project Description: Disinfection of Facilities 7.0 MGD activated sludge WWTP with primary and secondary wastewater treatment facilities.

KLH Engineers completed the design for the upgrade of the plant to increase peak treatment capacity in order to comply with Long-Term Control Plan requirements. A preliminary Basis of Design study included evaluation of upgrade requirements for: raw sewage pump station, headworks, secondary treatment, and disinfection. KLH evaluated secondary treatment alternatives including: conversion of the existing activated sludge process to modified Ludzack-Ettinger (MLE) including construction of new aeration tanks and secondary clarifiers, conversion of existing process to MLE and construction of a parallel sequencing batch reactor (SBR), and construction of an SBR for treatment of all flow. Design and construction of an SBR for all treatment was the selected alternative. The selection of this alternative allows for future conversion of the existing aeration tanks into additional aerobic digesters. KLH completed the design and bid phase services for the plant upgrade project, and is presently providing construction phase services.

The plant currently does not have nutrient limits, however the SBR design provides nutrient removal capacity at less than a five percent increase in project cost. Design limits are 5 mg/L and 1 mg/L for nitrogen and phosphorus respectively.
